Shortly before the UN climate summit in New York, the UN Environment Program (UNEP) called for significantly more efforts in the fight against global warming. Despite the decline in greenhouse gas emissions due to the corona pandemic and international climate pledges, global warming is heading to more than three degrees by the end of the century, UNEP said on Wednesday. Without a swift move away from fossil fuels, the goals of the almost five-year-old Paris climate agreement can no longer be achieved.

Cross-sectoral, energy-efficient and low-CO2 industrial processes and their sustainable decarbonisation offer great potential for achieving climate targets. Corresponding developments must meet demands for resource and material efficiency, sustainability, environmental and nature protection as well as sustainable reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

Against this background, for example, in a project in energy-intensive industry, the use of recyclable biogenic waste is demonstrated by integrating thermal processing in the plant.

The resulting biochar is intended to replace the fossil primary fuels. Another advantage is the use of waste heat from the production process that is already available.
